You Should Prepare This Before Going To Studienkolleg

Having the opportunity to pursue a degree in German is a dream of many people. However, due to the different system of education between countries, some students will need an extra qualification in order to get a sit in most German public universities. Therefore, Germany provides a one-year preparatory college, Studienkolleg, for international students, who does not have the university-entrance-qualification (in German : Abitur) to get directly into the Universities. In this blog, you will get to know more about all the essentials stuff you need to take care of before getting started to study in Germany.

1. Housing

As a student, the best option for accommodation of stay is to live in a shared flat or Wohngemeinschaft (WG). Usually there will be a recommended institution from the university, which arrange the housing. For example : In Konstanz, Baden-Württemberg, you can stay in the Wohngemeinschaft arranged by Seezeit. The cost differs from city to city. Speaking from experience, a 3-bed-room WG in Konstanz, Baden-Württemberg would cost around 335EUR per month all in (Water, Wi-Fi, Electricity, & Furniture). Finding accommodation in some cities could be challenging. It might be a good tip not to be picky when you just move in to the city.

Tips : Use the app "WG-Gesucht" to search for any type of accommodation in Germany. Please be cautious whenever using this app, since there are many cases of fraud!

2. Blocked account

To ensure that you will have the financial capability to finance your study during the Studienkolleg, Germany will require you to put off a certain amount of money (In 2019, it was 10.236 Euro) transferred into your blocked account in Germany at the very beginning. This amount of money would be transferred back to your Bank-account in Germany in monthly-basis (around 853EUR per month)

Tips : I highly recommend you to use Fintiba. Through my experience, they were really helpful and responsive whenever I have issues regarding this account.

3. High-school Qualification (legalized!)

It is so important to make sure the documents are complete and correct, both for applying the student visa to Germany or applying to the Studienkolleg. Some schools required you to send the documents directly to the university's address, some might ask you to apply through the Uni-Assist Portal, which is a German application website for Universities in Germany. Look thoroughly through each website of Studienkolleg or write an e-mail to their International office!

Legalization : The administration process in Germany can be very tricky. Make sure you were informed about the correct legalization of your documents, whether it is a High-school qualification or language-certificate.
